To help lay the groundwork for the initial Global Education and Technology Health (GETHealth) Summit, the Center for Global Health Studies (CGHS) at Fogarty held a series of consultations. The sessions were held in partnership with Johns Hopkins on the following topics: IT infrastructure; mhealth; gender empowerment; social media; and distance learning. Each of the five pre-Summit consultations posed a series of questions to a range of experts, and was designed to focus the goals, speakers, topics and deliverables at the Summit. After each consultation, a summary of proceedings was written and used to inform planning for the Summit.
Results
The initial GETHealth Summit took place in February 2013. Fogarty was an organizing partner of the Summit. Nalini Anand of the Center for Global Health Studies served on the Summit's Advisory Board. The meeting was convened by the Johns Hopkins Center for Clinical Global Health Education and the U.N. Global Partnerships Forum, and co-hosted by the governments of Ethiopia, Norway, Rwanda and Uganda.
Background
Wider and smarter use of information communication technology (ICT) could greatly improve health care provider education and research capacity in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly given current health and health research workforce gaps. With the goal of understanding how to bridge these gaps using ICT, the Johns Hopkins Center for Clinical Global Health Education planned the GETHealth Summit to convene leaders in health, health research, education and IT to discuss how ICT could best empower health providers and health researchers in LMICs.
