Focus: the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is one of the 27 institutes and centers that constitute the NIH.

The NIAID operating budget in fiscal year 2010 was approximately $4.8 billion. More than 11 percent of the NIAID budget supports international research and training, and NIAID is one of the few NIH institutes to have an Associate Director for International Research Affairs to facilitate international activities.

As with other large NIH institutes, most of the NIAID budget supports biomedical research at external academic and other research institutions. The remaining budget funds research within NIAID’s own laboratories and also supports administrative functions.
