Fogarty’s Impact in Facts, Numbers, and Stories

Fogarty International Center is dedicated to advancing the overall mission of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by supporting and facilitating global health research conducted by U.S. and international investigators. The center also builds partnerships between health research institutions in the U.S. and abroad and trains the next generation of scientists seeking to address global health needs.

Pursuing this mission, Fogarty adds substantial value to the NIH and the Department of Health and Human Services. Fogarty’s programs also directly benefit Americans. For example, health innovations, strategies, and solutions developed overseas through its research initiatives can be adapted and adopted for similarly situated populations in the U.S., such as in rural settings that have limited access to health care. Fogarty-trained scientists also help to mitigate emerging health threats and infectious diseases outbreaks before they become pandemics and reach American shores. And Fogarty helps establish networks of global health researchers to support groundbreaking clinical trials on issues that concern Americans, such as maternal-infant survival and Alzheimer’s disease.

Importantly, Fogarty extends the reach and competitiveness of U.S. universities through 439 active research and research training awards, many of which are funded by partner NIH institutes. Nearly all of Fogarty’s overseas grants involve American researchers—this includes a total of 764 principal investigators from 96 U.S. universities—while two-thirds are awarded to U.S. institutions.

The resources below illustrate the value of Fogarty’s work in facts, numbers, and stories.

Addressing the Rise in Chronic Diseases Around the Globe

Fogarty collaborates across NIH to support research and research training on chronic diseases in global settings. Fogarty grantees are driving important research forward, training a new generation of researchers, and applying advances in the treatment and prevention of chronic diseases in the U.S. Fogarty also works at the intersection of chronic and infectious diseases, an area that is difficult to study in the U.S. but is important for many Americans. In addition, Fogarty leads NIH-wide global initiatives and collaborates with global research funders to maximize our impact.

Developing Solutions for Childhood Obesity: Harnessing Global Learning

Fogarty’s efforts in the area highlight innovative research and health outcomes among Latin America and U.S. Latino populations as well as food insecurity globally. Latin American countries are testing interventions, including nutrition education, policy reforms, school-based programs, and community engagement, to promote healthier lifestyles and reduce childhood obesity rates. Fogarty convenes researchers from the U.S. and abroad to share and leverage existing knowledge.

Fogarty International Center Brief

Established in 1968, Fogarty’s distinct mission of global health research and research training ensures that all of NIH can harness scientific talent worldwide to combat health threats in the U.S. and abroad. Fogarty’s extramural portfolio supports collaborations between U.S. institutions and their global partners, with a focus on scientific partnerships with low- and middle-income country (LMIC) research institutions. In FY2024, Fogarty funded 440 grants to U.S. grantees across 39 states and involving 122 U.S. institutions.

Promoting Ethical Research Around the Globe

Fogarty supports research ethics training to promote the ethical conduct of NIH-sponsored research in global settings. The skills learned enable graduates to conduct high-quality institutional review board (IRB) review of proposed research studies and sustain local systems of ethical oversight. A subset continues their studies to complete advanced degrees and leverage their expertise to address broader ethical questions facing U.S. and global populations.
