Project Description
People with HIV have a higher prevalence of mental disorders compared to the general population, and the co-occurrence of these conditions are associated with adverse health outcomes in HIV, including poor adherence, poor viral suppression, and early mortality. A research training program at the intersection of mental disorders and HIV is urgently needed to address the synergistic stress associated with these conditions. A Fogarty training program at the University of Cape Town will allow for training the next generation of researchers and clinician-scientists in behavioral medicine to address the challenges associated with co-occurring HIV and mental disorders, and to become local and international leaders in HIV-associated behavioral medicine.
