Established in 2019, APTI is a four-year postdoctoral fellowships established by the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) in partnership with the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). African fellows are placed in various laboratories of the NIH Institutes or Centers (e.g., Intramural Research Program) for two years before returning to their home institutions in Africa for another two years of research that is supported by BMGF.

Trilateral partnership program to increase collaborative research between researchers from the Republic of Ireland (RoI), Northern Ireland (NI) and the United States. Funding agencies support the research undertaken in their own country. Funding commitment letters from the RoI and NI funders are included in the NIH grant application in place of Irish budgets and submissions from trilateral research teams undergo peer review only at NIH.
