POCTRN Unveils Six New Innovation Award Opportunities to Propel Point-of-Care Technologies

The Point-of-Care Technology Research Network (POCTRN) is currently seeking applications from academic and industry applicants who have innovative point-of-care technologies in such areas of chronic disease, infectious disease, and disease prevention as cancer detection, heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders, STIs, emerging infectious disease in low-resource settings, and more. 

Important Reminder on Applications from Foreign Institutions or Institutions with a Foreign Component

Per the SF424 Application Guide, applications submitted by foreign (non-U.S.) institutions or by domestic (U.S.) institutions with a foreign component, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, must include a “Foreign Justification” statement as part of the application package. This requirement is applicable regardless of eligibility requirements stated in the Notice of Funding Opportunity. Applications missing the foreign justification attachment are subject to withdrawal prior to review.

  • The Duke University's Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health is offering $3,700 scholarships for graduate students from underdeveloped countries to attend a 5-day workshop on conducting research in religion, spirituality, and health. The workshop will be held August 11–15, 2025, and scholarships will cover tuition, airfare, hotel accommodations, and meals. Apply as soon as possible to allow time for visa processing.

  • The Friends of the Philippines Scholarship is accepting applications. The scholarship is open to individuals who have a connection to the Philippines through heritage, community, studies, academic research, etc. Applicants must demonstrate a financial need, exhibit a commitment to global health, training, and/or service, and plan to participate in a 2025 Child Family Health International (CFHI) program in Global Health in the Philippines.

  • The UC Davis Quarter Abroad Latinx Health Internship in Oaxaca Scholarship is accepting applications. Child Family Health International (CFHI), which partners with University of California, Davis, gives students the opportunity to take UC Davis classes on transnational (US-Mexico) health issues and participate in approximately 180 hours of clinical rotations through internships in hospitals and clinics in Oaxaca, Mexico.

  • The First Generation Student Scholarship is accepting applications. The scholarship aims to support first generation college students who are passionate about making a difference in global health, providing them with resources to pursue their goals. Open to first-generation college students who intend to participate in a Child Family Health International place-based program.

  • International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) Research Grants program is accepting applications. The program is open to researchers who hold positions at universities or research institutes in one of the 22 ICGEB member states.
    Applications due: April 30, 2025
  • CARB-X's 2025 funding solicitation for products to address drug-resistant bacterial infections will open from April 16 to April 30, 2025. Applications will be accepted under two product themes: therapeutics for infections caused by Gram-negative pathogens and diagnostics for typhoid fever for low-resource settings. A second funding call will be held in the later months of 2025.

  • The International Society of Nephrology is accepting nominations for the Lillian Jean Kaplan International Prize for excellence and leadership in clinical or basic research in polycystic kidney disease (PKD).
    Application deadline: May 16, 2025
  • The Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) is now accepting applications for the Rita Levi-Montalcini (RLM) Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Center of Regenerative Medicine (CRM). This two-year fellowship is open to postdoctoral researchers of outstanding talent, especially those of international background, to pursue research in regenerative medicine within a CRM lab.

Plasmodium Genetic Epidemiology offers ‘Data to Insight’ Course

Plasmodium Genetic Epidemiology is offering a free course named From Data to Insight – A Practical Introduction to Interpreting Malaria Genetics for Surveillance to equip researchers, students, and public health officials with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively use malaria genetic data in epidemiological research and public health decision-making.

PAHO Offers Obesity and NCD Prevention Course

The Pan American Health Organization is offering a free course on Regulatory Policies to Prevent Obesity and Diet-related Noncommunicable Diseases. The course's purpose is to strengthen the learner’s capacity to design and advance effective regulatory policies that reduce the demand for and offer of ultra-processed and processed products to prevent obesity and diet-related NCDs in the Region of the Americas.

Manuscript, Abstract & Poster Submission Opportunities

  • The Santiago Exposome Symposium in Santiago, Chile, will bring together leading scientists in Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) to examine how environmental exposures impact ADRD. Special emphasis will be placed on regional cohorts and other studies from across Latin America.
