Project Description
Owing to the scale-up of control interventions, malarial burden has significantly declined in Zimbabwe and other endemic countries in the past ten years. However, the decline has been heterogeneous and a new setback of reinvasion from malarious to former malaria-free areas, including highly populated cities, is emerging. The goal of this project is to employ robust molecular and field approaches to ascertain the vector, parasite and host-related determinants of urban malaria in order to identify targets for control interventions to restore malaria-free status. The project will leverage on existing malaria surveillance collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Childcare and its partners and will incorporate evaluation of control interventions over time. It also lays groundwork for development of larger follow-up research gearing towards ultimate attainment of malaria elimination by the country which is a member of the malaria elimination-8 (E-8) block.
