Project Description
Despite the tremendous public health success in expanding antiretroviral therapy and preventing HIV transmission from mothers to their children, there remain health consequences for HIV-uninfected children born to HIV-infected mothers. This application will study a potential pathway, hypertensive disorders in pregnant HIV-infected women on antiretroviral therapy, that may be increasing adverse maternal, birth and infant outcomes in HIV-infected women and their HIV exposed uninfected children. This is of substantial public health importance in high as well as low HIV burden countries and if found to be true may require reconsideration of the optimal antiretroviral regimen for the health of HIV-infected women of child bearing age and their children.
