Project Description
Growing evidence indicates that exposure to chemicals in the environment might increase risk of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), although the mechanisms of disease initiation are not well understood. In Uganda, the estimated risk of mortality from NCDs is 22%, primarily due to cardiovascular disease and cancer among other factors. This program will assess the risk of exposure to emerging pollutants and the potential effects on mammalian metabolism to provide fundamental knowledge on how environmental insults alter biological processes and therefore inform interventions that prevent diseases and deaths through healthier environments.
