Project Description
Africa bears direct morbidity and mortality from poverty-related and neglected tropical diseases including schistosomiasis, which remains endemic in Uganda with an estimated 50% of the population at risk of infection and the associated complications of portal hypertension and fatal upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Since the description of schistosomiasis in Uganda in the 1950s, efforts to control this disease remain limited due to incomplete understanding of the pathogen, disease manifestations and transmission mechanisms, and inadequate preventive measures and interventions.
Capacity for advanced research training is clearly needed to provide schistosomiasis-focused scientists with sufficient capacity to analyze, model and predict relevant clinical case management systems, biological interventions, and disease control efforts in Uganda.
