Project Description
The research and career development are relevant to public health because rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is the leading acquired cardiac cause of morbidity and mortality in young people worldwide, affecting 33 million people, and disproportionately affecting low and middle income countries. Benzathine penicillin G (BPG) has been proven to decrease morbidity and mortality from RHD, yet no low income country has shown widespread adequate adherence to secondary prevention. Improving access and adherence to BPG are critical steps towards RHD eradication.
